Kentucky basketball head coach opens up over loss of Travis Perry, and it’s a great sign for Ole Miss

Ole MissĀ basketball has had a solid transfer portal, bringing in several players with high upside. None more than Kentucky transfer Travis Perry, joining Chris Beard’s roster after one season with the Wildcats.

Perry left high school as the record points holder in his home state, Kentucky. He appeared in 31 games under head coach Mark Pope, his first season on the Wildcats’ sidelines. However, he averaged just 9.8 minutes per game and wanted more game time, which was perhaps not guaranteed.

Pope spoke toĀ KSR, On3’s Kentucky Wildcats page and shared his feelings towards Perry’s departure.

“I was devastated when Travis left. Mostly because i think he is such a special young man…it was devastating to me, personally, because i enjoyed coaching him so much, and i think he has brilliant upside. I think he was on his way to becoming a legend here at Kentucky.”

Mark Pope

His words will get Ole Miss fans excited. With Perry looking like a future star with three years of eligibility remaining, he could be a mainstay for Beard over the next few seasons. The Rebels lost several top players after the 2024-25 season, and the Kentucky native could get the Pavilion on its feet with his three-point shooting skills. He also offers much more to Beard’s team.

The third-year Ole Miss coach is fully aware of what Perry brings; that’s why he recruited him out of high school so heavily, making his final five before committing to Kentucky. Speaking to On3’sĀ OM Spirit, Beard was happy with Perry heading to Oxford.

“Just has a huge ceiling for where he could be as a player. Simply stated, very high expectations for him.”

Chris Beard

Beard is happy with his 2025-26 season roster, but is still in contact with one or two transfers, including USC transfer Demond Claude.
