Celtics get bad news on potential starting lineup for next season

The Boston Celtics have many questions to answer ahead of next season, but signs are pointing to an unfortunate situation for now.

Last season, the Celtics were among the favorites to win an NBA title, but after Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles and a second-round exit, Boston is far from title contention in 2026. After Brad Stevens traded Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to aid the team’s financial situation, the team also lost Luke Kornet in free agency and is unlikely to retain Al Horford.

While those names paint an obvious picture of lost talent, it also leaves the Celtics without any of the centers who were in their rotation last season.

Considering they haven’t addressed that issue in any meaningful way through the draft, free agency or trades, the Celtics might not have an ideal option as their starting center when next season begins.

Recently, MassLive’s Brian Robb revealed that Neemias Queta is likely the frontrunner for the Celtics’ starting five spot. Queta has been with the team for the past two seasons and began to play a somewhat larger role last season.

At 7 feet, 245 pounds, the 26-year-old has a big frame and is able to be a reliable presence inside. A solid shot blocker and rebounder, Queta can give the Celtics a traditional center next season, giving the team at least a solid floor in that area.

Still, if Boston wants to compete for a playoff spot, it might need to add another big and slide Queta into a backup role. There is no doubt that Queta could play a key role for the Celtics next season, but thrusting him into the starting role on opening night might have mixed results.
