In a surprise move that has stunned the rugby league world, Sydney Roosters head coach Trent Robinson has announced he will step down from his position ahead of the 2026 NRL season.
Robinson, who has led the Roosters since 2013 and won multiple premierships with the club, revealed that it’s time for “a new chapter” after years of dedication to the team.
> “This club has been my home, my passion, and my purpose for many years,” Robinson said in a statement. “But the time has come for new ideas and fresh energy. I’ll always be grateful for the memories and the people here.”

A Coaching Legacy
Robinson has been one of the most respected coaches in the NRL, known for his calm leadership and strong game strategies. His time at the Roosters included three premiership wins and a reputation for building tough, disciplined teams.

Hints of Frustration
Though Robinson has mostly kept things professional, he has shown frustration in the past—particularly when speaking about refereeing and player decisions.
Earlier this year, he called out the NRL’s video review system, saying,
> “The rules are really clear—we just need them followed.”
He also wasn’t afraid to be honest with players, once telling young half Sandon Smith that he needed to improve his game to earn more opportunities.

What’s Next?
While Robinson hasn’t revealed his next move, there is talk that he may take a role overseas or possibly step back from coaching entirely. The Roosters now face the task of finding a new head coach just months before the new season begins.
Whoever steps in will have big shoes to fill.
