The Sydney Roosters have officially confirmed they will part ways with veteran star James Tedesco, ending a high-profile chapter in the club’s history.
The decision comes after a brutal 2025 NRL season, where the Roosters failed to meet expectations, finishing outside the top eight. Tedesco, once the face of the club and a former Dally M Medalist, had a mixed season marked by injuries and inconsistent form.
Club officials reportedly made the call as part of a wider roster shake-up, with sources saying over $90 million in future salary cap space could be freed up over the coming years. While Tedesco’s legacy remains intact, the club is now focused on rebuilding with younger talent.
“We thank James for his incredible service to the Roosters,” said Roosters CEO Joe Kelly. “He’s been a leader on and off the field, and while this wasn’t an easy decision, it’s one we feel is necessary for the future of the club.”
Tedesco, 32, joined the Roosters in 2018 and led the team to back-to-back premierships in 2018 and 2019. He has not announced his retirement and is expected to weigh up offers from rival NRL clubs or potentially overseas.
