In a development that has caught many Panthers fans off guard, head coach Ivan Cleary has finally spoken out about the future of club stalwart James Fisher-Harris, one of the most respected veterans in the Penrith Panthers squad.
During a post-training media session earlier this week, Cleary addressed swirling speculation about Fisher-Harris’s long-term role at the club, following recent reports hinting at a possible exit or reduced role heading into the 2026 NRL season.
> “James has been a warrior for this club for a long time,” Cleary said. “He’s given everything for the jersey, but we’re at a point now where some tough decisions need to be made around our roster balance and salary cap.”
While Cleary stopped short of confirming whether Fisher-Harris would remain with the club beyond this season, he acknowledged that internal discussions are ongoing and that both parties are “considering all options.”
Fisher-Harris, 29, has been a cornerstone of Penrith’s forward pack since his debut in 2016 and played a critical role in the club’s premiership three-peat from 2021 to 2023. Known for his uncompromising style and leadership on and off the field, any hint of his departure is sure to send shockwaves through the Panthers’ fanbase.
> “It’s never easy when it comes to players like Fish,” Cleary added. “He’s earned the right to be part of these conversations, and we’ll continue to support him whatever he decides.”
As the Panthers gear up for another finals push, all eyes will be on Fisher-Harris’s next move—and whether the club can hold onto one of its most loyal warriors amid a rapidly changing roster landscape.
