In a move that has stunned fans and former teammates alike, Parramatta Eels star Mitchell Brown has announced his retirement from professional rugby league at just 30 years old.
Brown, who was named the Eels’ Player of the Year in 2022, confirmed the decision earlier this week, citing personal reasons and the toll the sport has taken on him both physically and mentally.
“While stepping away wasn’t easy, I knew deep down it was the right time,” Brown said. “The game has given me so much, but after a lot of reflection, I realised my passion was starting to shift. I want to leave the game on my own terms.”
The versatile back has been a key figure for the Eels over the past several seasons, earning widespread respect for his leadership on and off the field. His standout 2022 season was marked by consistent performances, resilience, and a strong connection with fans.
Though his retirement came as a surprise to many in the rugby league community, Brown said the support he’s received since the announcement has been overwhelming.
“I’m incredibly grateful to the Eels, my teammates, coaches, and the fans who have stood by me through everything. This club will always be home.”
As Mitchell Brown steps into the next chapter of his life, speculation is already mounting about his potential future in coaching, commentary, or player development — paths many believe would suit the thoughtful and experienced former Eel.
For now, though, the rugby league world bids farewell to one of its modern-day warriors, who bows out with pride, dignity, and the respect of the game.
