Parramatta Eels star Shaun Lane has stunned fans by announcing his immediate retirement from the NRL — but it’s what he’s doing next that really has people talking.
In a surprise move, Lane revealed he’s stepping away from the field to take on a full-time role leading the Eels’ mental health and wellbeing program.
The veteran forward, who has battled injuries and personal challenges throughout his career, said the decision came from the heart.
> “I’ve realised how important mental health is in this game,” Lane said. “I want to help others find the support I wish I had at times.”
Lane’s new role will see him working closely with players, coaches, and club staff to create a stronger focus on mental wellbeing across all levels of the club.
The Eels praised Lane’s courage, calling his transition a “game-changer” for the culture of rugby league.
> “Shaun has always been a leader. Now he’s leading in a whole new way,” said Eels CEO Jim Sarantinos.
Fans were quick to react online, flooding social media with messages of support and admiration. Many called Lane’s decision “inspiring” and “one of the most important moves in Eels history.”
While his days on the field are over, Shaun Lane’s next chapter might be his most impactful yet.
