Sacked to saviour: How Bronco’s son saved his NRL career

When Josiah Karapani runs onto the field for Brisbane, he does so with more than just the weight of a jersey on his back—he carries the spirit of his one-year-old son, Lorenzo. For the Broncos flyer, fatherhood has become the unexpected force that rescued his career after it nearly slipped away.

From heartbreak to hope

Karapani’s journey has been anything but straightforward. After being cut by South Sydney in a brutal career setback, the outside back was left questioning his future in the game. Compounding the challenge was a personal upheaval—separated from his son by more than 1000km following a relationship breakdown.

But rather than sinking under the pressure, Karapani found a new purpose. “Lorenzo gave me something bigger to fight for,” he shared. “Every training session, every game—I think of him. He’s my motivation to keep going.”

A second chance in Brisbane

The Broncos offered Karapani a lifeline, signing him to prove himself in one of the most competitive squads in the NRL. Determined not to waste the opportunity, he embraced the hard work, sharpened his game, and fought his way into the club’s plans.

Coaches and teammates have praised his resilience, noting his speed, strength, and hunger to succeed. But for Karapani, the difference is mental: he no longer plays solely for himself.

Fatherhood as fuel

Karapani admits the physical distance from Lorenzo is tough, but says his son is with him in spirit every time he steps onto the field. “I can’t always be there in person, but he’s the reason I push through the hard days. He saved my career,” he said.

That new perspective has not only reignited his NRL ambitions but also earned him admiration within the Broncos squad, where teammates see him as a player transformed by responsibility and love.

The road ahead

Still early in his career, Karapani has shown flashes of the player South Sydney once believed in—and Brisbane now believes could become a long-term weapon. More importantly, he’s shown himself that setbacks don’t have to define the future.

From sacked prospect to rejuvenated Bronco, Karapani’s story is one of resilience, responsibility, and redemption. And at the centre of it all is Lorenzo—the little boy who gave his father the biggest reason of all to chase his dreams.
