New Castleford Tigers head coach Ryan Carr has opened up on his decision to join the club, outlining both the motivations behind the move and the standards he expects from his playing group as he begins a new chapter at Wheldon Road.
Carr, who arrives with a strong reputation for developing tough, disciplined teams, says the Tigers’ potential and honesty during discussions convinced him Castleford was the right fit.

Why Carr Chose Castleford
Speaking after his appointment, Carr revealed that the club’s vision and willingness to confront hard truths were key factors in his decision.
“Castleford is a proud club with a strong identity,” Carr said. “What stood out to me was the openness of the conversations — there was no sugar-coating where the club is at or what needs to improve. That honesty is something I value.”
Carr added that the Tigers’ supporter base and rugby league culture played a major role in attracting him, describing the club as one that still commands respect across Super League.
Clear Demands on the Playing Group
While Carr is excited by the challenge, he made it clear that standards will be non-negotiable.
“There has to be accountability every single day,” he said. “Effort, discipline, and commitment to the team come first. If those things aren’t there, it doesn’t matter how talented you are.”
Carr stressed that selection would be based on work ethic and consistency, not reputation, and warned that places in the squad would need to be earned.
Focus on Defence and Mentality
One of Carr’s immediate priorities will be tightening Castleford’s defensive systems and improving resilience under pressure.
“We need to be a team that’s hard to beat,” he explained. “That starts with attitude. Defence is about trust, effort, and willingness to work for your teammate.”
He also highlighted the importance of fitness and preparation, stating that the demands of modern Super League leave no room for shortcuts.
Building a United Club
Carr emphasized that success would require unity beyond the playing squad, calling for alignment between players, staff, and supporters.
“This club will only move forward if everyone is pulling in the same direction,” he said. “I want the players to feel the responsibility of wearing this jersey and understand what it means to the fans.”
Looking Ahead
With pre-season preparations already underway, Carr is eager to put his stamp on the Tigers and begin laying the foundations for sustained improvement.
“I’m not here for quick fixes,” he said. “I’m here to build something that lasts — and that starts with setting high standards from day one.”
Castleford fans can expect a demanding but determined Tigers outfit under Carr, with accountability, effort, and pride set to define the next era at the club.
