Portland Trail Blazers Face Boston Celtics in East Coast Showdown

The Portland Trail Blazers are set to face off against the Boston Celtics in snowy Boston as they open a three-game east coast road trip. Both teams come into this matchup looking to recover from tough losses, adding extra intensity to the upcoming game.

The Blazers, sitting at .500 with a 23-23 record, suffered a disappointing 110-98 defeat against the Toronto Raptors on Friday night, where they struggled significantly in the first quarter, scoring only 12 points. Despite their efforts to make the game competitive, they fell short of the 100-point mark for the sixth time this season.

Conversely, the Celtics, boasting a 28-17 record, are returning home after a heart-wrenching loss to the Chicago Bulls, where a last-second three-pointer from Kevin Huerter sealed the 114-111 victory for Chicago. Earlier this season, the two teams met in Portland, where the Blazers exploited the Celtics’ late-game turnovers to secure a narrow 114-108 victory, setting the stage for an intriguing rematch.

Preseason expectations for the Celtics were tempered, especially with Jayson Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury that sidelined him for the entire 2025-2026 season. Following the departure of key players from their 2024 championship team—including Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday—the Celtics appeared to be in a rebuilding phase. However, they have surprisingly clinched the second spot in the Eastern Conference as of late January, particularly shining after an initial 5-7 start. Currently, Boston boasts the league’s top-ranked offense, averaging 121.2 points per 100 possessions, alongside a strong net rating of +7.2, second only to the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder and the Eastern Conference-leading Detroit Pistons.

The Blazers have also turned a corner, emerging as one of the hottest teams in the league, with a 9-3 record since the onset of 2026. Their offense ranks seventh in the NBA, averaging 116.5 points per 100 possessions, while the defense ranks ninth, allowing 111.5 points per 100. The return of seasoned players Jerami Grant and Jrue Holiday, who had been nursing injuries, is a welcomed boost for the Blazers as they aim to lessen the burden on Deni Avdija, who has been struggling with a lower back strain.

As both teams prepare for the clash at 5 PM Pacific time, several injury updates loom large. The Blazers will be without key players including Scoot Henderson, Damian Lillard, and Matisse Thybulle. Deni Avdija and Robert Williams III are both listed as questionable. The Celtics will miss Jayson Tatum and have Josh Minott and Neemias Queta as questionable.

Both teams exhibit a penchant for three-point shooting, ranking among the top three in the league for attempts per game. The Celtics attempt an average of 42.7 threes, placing second league-wide, closely followed by the Blazers with 41.7. Notably, the Celtics achieve a higher conversion rate of 36.9%, landing them eighth in the NBA, whereas the Blazers are ranked last at 33.8%. The question remains whether the Blazers can increase their three-point efficiency while simultaneously limiting the Celtics’ shooting opportunities.

One defining matchup to watch is between turnovers and free throws. The Celtics are exceptionally disciplined, averaging just 12 turnovers per game, in stark contrast to the Blazers, who lead the league with 16.8 turnovers. In their previous encounter, the Blazers capitalized on 19 Celtics turnovers, which proved crucial in their victory. Maintaining a manageable turnover margin will be vital for Portland if they hope to secure a win in Boston.

As the game approaches, all eyes will be on Anfernee Simons, who has stepped up since the earlier matchup with Boston, increasing his scoring from an average of 12.8 points to 16.4 while shooting an impressive 44.5% from three-point range over the last 14 games. The Celtics’ Jaylen Brown, who scored 37 points in the last encounter, will be looking to dominate again, stepping into his role as Boston’s leading scorer and playmaker. With the stakes high for both teams, tonight’s rematch promises to be an electrifying clash on the court.
