Penrith Panthers forward Scott Sorensen is on the verge of a surprise move to the English Super League, with powerhouse club St Helens tabling a two-year deal worth approximately $850,000 AUD.
At 32, Sorensen remains a key part of the Panthers’ forward rotation and has played an integral role in their premiership success over recent seasons. But with salary cap pressures mounting and interest from abroad growing, the veteran Kiwi international is now seriously considering an early release from his Penrith contract, which runs until the end of 2026.
Sources close to the situation say Sorensen is attracted by the fresh challenge in the UK, as well as the financial security the deal provides in the twilight of his career. While no formal release has yet been granted, discussions are believed to be ongoing between his management and Panthers officials.
St Helens, a four-time reigning Super League champion before Wigan’s resurgence, are in the midst of a roster shake-up and view Sorensen as a perfect fit to bolster their pack with leadership and experience.
“I’ve still got more to give — and I want to do it at the highest level possible, wherever that may be,” Sorensen recently said in a reflective comment that now seems to hint at the possible shift overseas.
Should the deal be finalized, it would mark the end of a memorable era for Sorensen at Penrith — one filled with resilience, redemption, and silverware. For St Helens, it could be the signing that powers another push for glory.
