Penrith Panthers hooker attracts Super League interest in latest transfer move

Catalans Dragons have made hooker Soni Luke their latest transfer target as plans for 2026 continue to evolve.

The French club appears set to be the most active club in the recruitment market heading into next season, having already made a raft of signings, with plenty more set to follow.

And All Out Rugby League understands the Tonga international is the latest player they are circling as Joel Tomkins continues to make changes ahead of next season.

Catalans attempted to transition captain Benjamin Garcia to the nine role this season, but have ultimately ditched those plans after a difficult start to the season. His last seven appearances have all come in the back row.

Penrith Panthers hooker Soni Luke.

Garcia was essentially moved there to replace Micky McIlorum, as the club did not sign a replacement. After deciding not to continue with the Frenchman there, they have been left without a hooker.

In the short term, they have been able to call upon Denive Balmforth, the Hull FC loan man who has rotated with Alrix Da Costa. Balmforth is part of the Black and Whites’ long-term plans, having signed a contract extension there until the end of 2028.

So with another hooker needed, Catalans have identified Luke, who is off-contract with Penrith Panthers and appears set to depart at the end of the year.

Part of the Penrith Panthers squad that won multiple Premierships, he has struggled for game time with the NRL giants, other than in 2023 when he made 20 appearances.

However, he would qualify for a Governing Body Endorsement through his international appearances after representing Tonga in the Pacific Championships last year.

Luke was offered to Super League clubs earlier this year and it isn’t the first time he has attracted interest from the competition, with Hull FC showing interest in 2023.

Now, the Dragons are the club in pursuit.
