The Penrith Panthers have taken a bold step ahead of the 2026 NRL season, completing a series of strategic draft pick swaps in a bid to secure one of the league’s most sought-after stars.
Club officials confirmed on Monday that the Panthers finalized the complex trade involving multiple clubs, reshuffling future draft selections to strengthen their negotiating position for a marquee signing. While Penrith has not yet officially named their target, insiders suggest the club is positioning itself to lure a top-tier representative player capable of reshaping their attacking structure.

Sources close to the negotiations indicate that the Panthers’ recruitment staff have been in ongoing discussions with several player managers since August, focusing on bringing in a proven match-winner to complement their already formidable spine.
Panthers general manager of football, Matt Cameron, said the move was about maintaining long-term success rather than reacting to short-term pressure.
“We’re always looking ahead,” Cameron said. “This deal gives us flexibility. We’ve had great stability over the last few seasons, but we also know the competition keeps evolving — and so must we.”
The pick swap reportedly involved exchanging future second- and third-round selections with a lower-ranked club, allowing Penrith to gain priority access in the upcoming player movement window.
Although the club remained tight-lipped about which star they’re pursuing, speculation has linked them to several high-profile names coming off contract in 2026 — including Origin and Test-level talent.
Penrith, winners of three consecutive premierships between 2021 and 2023, are eager to reinforce their roster following the departure of key players in recent seasons. The move signals the Panthers’ intent to remain at the top of the NRL ladder and continue their reputation for shrewd recruitment.
“We’ve built a culture around development, but when a special player becomes available, you have to be ready to act,” head coach Ivan Cleary said. “That’s what this move is about — preparation and opportunity.”
With the NRL transfer market expected to heat up over the coming weeks, all eyes will be on Penrith to see if their bold pick swap strategy pays off — and whether it lands them the superstar they’re chasing.
