The Brisbane Broncos have been dealt a major concern with star prop Payne Haas suffering an injury scare during the warm-up of their clash with the Parramatta Eels — and later picking up an ankle injury during the match itself.
Haas appeared to be in discomfort prior to kick-off, raising early concerns among the Broncos coaching staff. Despite the scare, he started the match, but the towering forward was noticeably hampered late in the game, eventually suffering an ankle injury that forced him to limp off the field in the closing stages.
The Broncos fell to a disappointing defeat at the hands of a resurgent Eels outfit, but the focus post-match quickly turned to Haas and the extent of his injury.
Coach Kevin Walters confirmed the medical staff would assess the severity of the ankle issue in the coming days.
“Payne’s a tough customer, but he wasn’t 100% even going into the game,” Walters said. “We’ll get scans done and see where he’s at.”
Haas has been a cornerstone of the Broncos pack this season, and any time on the sidelines would be a significant blow to Brisbane’s finals hopes.
More updates to follow as the club monitors Haas’ recovery.
