In one of the most stunning upsets in recent NRLW history, the Parramatta Eels have shocked last year’s grand finalists, the Cronulla Sharks, with an 18–16 victory to open their 2025 campaign.
Led by a standout performance from playmaker Rachael Pearson, who contributed 10 crucial points, the Eels showed resilience and hunger in a back-and-forth contest that defied pre-game predictions. The Sharks, heavily favoured to dominate, were stunned early by the Eels’ aggressive start and struggled to recover.
Chloe Jackson, one of Parramatta’s rising stars, scored two tries and made 33 tackles while running for nearly 100 metres, earning widespread praise for her all-around display. The Eels’ defensive effort, particularly in the dying minutes, proved decisive as they held off a late Cronulla surge.
“This win means everything to us,” said Eels coach Dean Widders post-match. “The girls showed heart, grit, and composure under pressure. We know we’re building something special.”
The victory is a major boost for the Eels, who endured a challenging 2024 season and entered 2025 with several new faces in their lineup. Pre-game changes saw Tess McWilliams replace Bree Eales, who was ruled out due to injury.
For Cronulla, the loss raises early questions about their title credentials. They were left to rue uncharacteristic errors and a lack of cohesion in key moments.
The Eels will now look to carry this momentum into Round 2, while the Sharks return to the drawing board after a humbling start to the season.
