In a surprise move set to shake up the NRL landscape, the Parramatta Eels have confirmed the signing of former Penrith Panthers star James Slows on a three-year deal.
The 27-year-old forward, known for his tough carries and defensive grit, will make the switch to CommBank Stadium after a solid stint with the reigning premiers. While Slows was often overshadowed by bigger names in Penrith’s star-studded pack, his consistency and work rate made him a key contributor to the Panthers’ recent dominance.
Eels General Manager of Football, Mark O’Neill, expressed excitement about the club’s latest acquisition.
> “James brings exactly the kind of resilience and professionalism we want at Parramatta,” O’Neill said. “He’s played in big games, he knows how to win, and we believe he’ll bring a lot to our forward pack both on and off the field.”
Slows, who made his NRL debut in 2019, has played over 100 first-grade games and was part of the Panthers’ 2022 and 2023 premiership-winning squads. His experience is expected to bolster an Eels side aiming to return to finals contention after a disappointing 2024 campaign.
Speaking to media after the announcement, Slows said he was “grateful” for his time at Penrith but ready for a new challenge.
> “Parra’s a proud club with a great fanbase. I’m excited to get to work and help bring success back to the blue and gold,” he said.
Slows will officially join the Eels at the start of the 2026 pre-season.
