Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has come under pressure after resting 16 key players ahead of a crucial match against the Canterbury Bulldogs—a decision now under investigation by the NRL amid a sharp shift in betting odds. Among those rested were co-captain Nathan Cleary, along with Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin .
The decision triggered a betting plunge: the Bulldogs went from $2.30 underdogs to $1.60 favourites, leading to a betting suspension and the opening of an integrity probe .
Ivan Cleary defended the move as a strategic rest ahead of the finals push: “It was an easy decision… fatigue was definitely part of it,” he explained, emphasising the importance of player welfare and long-term success .
Despite criticism from pundits and fans, Cleary remained resolute, stating there was “nothing wrong” with the plan and highlighting his aim for the Panthers to become the first team to win a premiership from outside the top four in the NRL era . The NRL’s integrity unit continues its investigation, although no official breaches have been confirmed to date.
