“I’m Ready for a New Challenge”: Jarome Luai Set to Join Wests Tigers in $4 Million Deal

Penrith Panthers star five-eighth Jarome Luai is set to leave the reigning premiers at the end of the 2024 season, signing a blockbuster $4 million deal with the Wests Tigers in one of the biggest moves of the NRL offseason.

After months of speculation, sources close to the negotiations have confirmed that Luai has agreed to a four-year contract reportedly worth $1 million per season, a figure the Panthers were unwilling to match under their salary cap constraints.

Speaking exclusively following the deal, Luai said, “I’m ready for a new challenge. I’ve loved everything about my time at Penrith, but it’s time to step out of my comfort zone and help build something new.”

The 27-year-old, who has played a key role in Penrith’s three consecutive premierships, is expected to become a centrepiece of the Tigers’ rebuilding plans under coach Benji Marshall.

While Penrith coach Ivan Cleary expressed disappointment at losing Luai, he said the club was proud of his development and respected his decision. “He’s been massive for us, but we understand it’s a business. We wish him nothing but the best—after next season, of course.”

Luai is expected to see out the 2024 campaign with Penrith before joining the Tigers in 2025. His departure opens the door for young playmakers such as Jack Cole or Daine Laurie to step into a starting role next year.

The Panthers are yet to make an official announcement, but confirmation is expected in the coming days.
