In a move that has Mariners fans buzzing, Seattle is bringing back a familiar face: veteran third baseman Eugenio Suárez. The club announced the acquisition just ahead of the MLB trade deadline, reuniting with Suárez after a brief stint with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The trade, finalized on July 31 and pending a physical, marks a significant mid-season push by the Mariners to bolster their lineup for a postseason run. Suárez, who played in Seattle during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, returns to a city where he was both a fan favorite and a key contributor.
> “Adding Eugenio back into our clubhouse is incredibly impactful,” said Mariners GM Justin Hollander. “His power, experience, and leadership are exactly what we need down the stretch.”
Suárez hit 53 home runs and tallied 183 RBIs in his two previous seasons with the Mariners, helping lead the team to the playoffs in 2022 and providing steady production at the hot corner.
He had been traded to the Diamondbacks after the 2023 season but struggled to find the same success in Arizona. Now, the Mariners are betting that a return to familiar territory — and a playoff-hungry roster — will spark a late-season surge for the veteran slugger.
This deal wasn’t the Mariners’ only move at the deadline. Seattle also landed first baseman Josh Naylor from Cleveland, further boosting their offensive arsenal. The flurry of acquisitions underscores Seattle’s intention to challenge for the AL West crown and beyond.
> “It feels like coming home,” Suárez said in a statement. “I’ve missed this team, this city, and these fans. Let’s go win something.”
With Suárez back in navy and teal, the Mariners are banking on some déjà vu magic — and maybe a few more home runs into the upper deck at T-Mobile Park.
