NRL club offers Smith $1.3 million
Rising NRL talent Sandon Smith has become the hottest name on the 2026 transfer market, sparking a fierce bidding war for his signature.
After the Canberra Raiders withdrew from the chase earlier this week, the race narrowed to the Newcastle Knights and North Queensland Cowboys. The Knights appeared to be in pole position after putting forward a four-year contract, but the Cowboys have since upped the ante.

According to the Courier Mail, North Queensland has tabled a massive $1.3 million, three-year deal to lure Smith to Townsville, where he would line up in his preferred role at five-eighth. That move would see him partner Maroons halfback Tom Dearden, a combination that many believe could transform the Cowboys’ attack.
Former Queensland Origin star Scott Sattler told the Courier Mail he sees huge potential in the pairing.
“Sandon Smith would be a great fit for the Cowboys,” Sattler said.
“He’d be the perfect foil for Tommy Dearden. It would let Tommy step up as the No.7 and take control of the team, while Sandon becomes the playmaker who pulls the trigger when needed.”
Smith has yet to decide on his next club, but one thing is certain — the 21-year-old playmaker will be wearing an NRL jersey in 2026.
