Castleford Tigers close in on NRL halfback but face one key stumbling block

Castleford Tigers are closing in on the signing of halfback Tom Weaver, as the club’s squad shake-up continues to take place.

All Out Rugby League revealed in July that Weaver had emerged as the club’s first-choice halfback option heading into the 2026 signing and they have retained interest in the 22-year-old halfback since as recruitment continues to evolve heading into next season.

Castleford Tigers are hoping to complete a deal for an NRL half-back.

Blake Taafe has already been signed for next season and could play in the halves, but the club still wants to sign Weaver following his release from the Titans at the end of the year.

However, the move hinges on Castleford freeing up a quota spot, with the club currently having ten overseas signings contracted for next season.

Joe Stimson, Daejarn Asi, Tex Hoy, Liam Horne and Zac Cini remain contracted and alongside Taafe, the Tigers have signed Renouf Atoni, Brock Greacan, Semi Valemei, Mikaele Ravalawa.

It means that Weaver’s move can only be finalised once one of those players departs, but that’s something the Tigers are working on.

All Out Rugby League has been told by multiple sources that Cini almost left the club recently to join another Super League club, only for the deal to collapse once it was close to completion. There have also been suggestions that the club would be open to Liam Horne departing, while Tex Hoy’s future has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks.

Once one of those players departs, Castleford will be able to sign off their deal for Weaver, who is understood to have agreed terms with the Tigers after his release from the Titans was confirmed at their end-of-season awards ceremony earlier this week.

Weaver has made 11 NRL appearances, five of which came this year. He has also featured in the Queensland Cup for Tweed.
