Broncos make $3.5 million move in bid to stop superstar Payne Haas signing with rival club

Payne Haas’ manager says he can’t see the Broncos prop playing for another club, and hinted that the 25-year-old is edging closer to a three-year extension at Brisbane worth around $3.5 million.

Haas is widely regarded as the best prop in the game, and would likely field massive offers from rival clubs if he hit the NRL open market on November 1, with his current deal running until the end of 2026.

The cashed-up Perth Bears enter the NRL in 2027 and would be able to blow most rival clubs out of the water if they entered a bidding war for Haas. The NSW Origin prop could easily command a salary in excess of $1.5 million a year, and he would be the perfect marquee star for Mal Meninga’s Bears to build their team around.

The threat of a big-money play from R360 is also a genuine possibility and Haas reportedly held preliminary discussions with officials from the rebel rugby competition recently. But Haas’ manager Ahmad Merhi has indicated that the rep forward’s preference is to remain with the Broncos, and suggested that his future would be sorted out after Sunday’s grand final against Melbourne.

It’s understood the Broncos are looking to extend Haas for another three seasons on a deal worth around $1.2 million per season. That would see Haas locked down at Brisbane until the end of the 2029 season and represent the richest offer for a forward in the Broncos’ 37-year history.

Payne Haas tipped to sign $3.5 million Broncos extension

And Haas’ manager has given a massive indication that he’ll knock back interest from rival clubs to remain a Broncos player. “Honestly at this stage, we aren’t going down that road (R360). I don’t know exactly what is happening with R360,” Merhi told The Courier Mail about the rebel rugby competition. “Our main focus right now is doing a new deal with the Broncos.

“I hope Payne wins a premiership on Sunday night and after that we will look to sort his future out. Payne is a Bronco, I can’t ever see him playing for another club.”

Haas is already a five-time Paul Morgan Medallist as Brisbane’s player of the year, and has gone from strength to strength in 2025 to cement his status as the NRL’s premier middle forward. The 25-year-old has averaged 168 run metres from a total of 3878m this season and averages 35 tackles per match. His offloading game has gone up another level and his footwork and speed is almost unprecedented for a man of his size.
