In a move no one saw coming, the Brisbane Broncos have officially announced that club legend Darren Lockyer will take over as head coach for the 2026 NRL season.
The bombshell was dropped during a surprise press conference at Suncorp Stadium this morning, where club executives revealed that Lockyer—who retired from playing in 2011 and has since served in off-field roles—will replace current head coach Kevin Walters at the end of the 2025 season.
“This club means everything to me,” Lockyer said. “When the opportunity came up, I knew I had to take it. I’m ready to bring a new era of Broncos footy.”
Lockyer, a six-time State of Origin winner and Broncos’ all-time appearance leader, has long been a fan favourite. While he has no prior head coaching experience, insiders say his leadership, deep understanding of the game, and long-standing connection with the club made him the standout choice.
Fans have taken to social media with a mix of shock, excitement, and curiosity about how the Broncos icon will perform in the hot seat.
“Locky coaching the Broncos? That’s the plot twist 2025 needed!” one fan wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Whether the move proves to be a masterstroke or a massive gamble remains to be seen—but one thing’s for sure: all eyes will be on Brisbane next season.
