Brisbane Broncos Star Could Quit the Club After Brutal Moment That Changed NRL Grand Final

A heartbreaking and brutal moment from the 2025 NRL Grand Final could spell the end of Adam Reynolds’ time at the Brisbane Broncos, with reports suggesting the veteran halfback is seriously considering retirement or even an early release from his deal after sustaining a devastating shoulder injury during the decider.

The Moment That Changed Everything

The Broncos’ hopes of defending their premiership took a cruel turn late in the second half of the Grand Final against the Melbourne Storm, when Reynolds was flattened in a heavy tackle by Nelson Asofa-Solomona while attempting a short kick near the line.

The 35-year-old skipper was forced from the field in visible pain, and although he tried to return for the final stages, medical staff ruled him out after concerns of a shoulder tear. That brutal moment, which shifted momentum toward the Storm, has since raised questions about Reynolds’ future in the NRL.

“Adam has given everything to this club, and that moment just summed up how tough he is,” teammate Payne Haas told Nine News. “But I know he’s thinking long and hard about what’s next for him and his family.”

Uncertain Future for the Veteran Playmaker

Reynolds, who joined the Broncos from South Sydney in 2022, has been instrumental in leading the club’s resurgence under Michael Maguire, steering the team to consecutive Grand Final appearances.

However, with persistent injuries to his groin and shoulder, and the rise of young half Ezra Mam, the Broncos are quietly preparing for life beyond their captain.

Club sources told The Courier-Mail that Maguire has already begun discussing succession plans involving Jock Madden and Tristan Sailor, who could share playmaking duties in 2026 if Reynolds steps away.

“We’ll support Adam in whatever decision he makes,” said Broncos football director Ben Ikin. “He’s been enormous for us both on and off the field.”

Teammates Feeling the Weight

The emotional fallout from the Grand Final loss has reportedly affected several key Broncos players. Reece Walsh was visibly distraught after the final whistle, while Patrick Carrigan and Jordan Riki were seen consoling Reynolds as he left the field.

Behind the scenes, the mood has been described as “flat,” with one insider claiming the injury to their leader “changed everything.”

“When your captain goes down like that in the biggest game of the year, it hits everyone hard,” the source said. “He’s been the heartbeat of the group since arriving from Souths.”

What’s Next for Brisbane

If Reynolds does decide to call time on his career, the Broncos will have significant salary cap room to maneuver — potentially allowing them to chase another marquee playmaker.

Rumours are already linking the club to Mitchell Moses (Parramatta Eels) and Sam Walker (Sydney Roosters) as potential recruits for 2026, though both are under contract and would require complex negotiations.

For now, the club and its fans are waiting on word from Reynolds himself. He’s expected to make an official statement in the coming weeks once post-season medical assessments are complete.
