BREAKING: Queensland Axe Daly Cherry‑Evans — End of an Origin Era?

In a decision that has stunned rugby league fans across the country, Queensland Maroons coach Billy Slater has dropped veteran halfback Daly Cherry‑Evans ahead of Game II of the 2025 State of Origin series.

The move ends a decade-long Origin legacy for Cherry‑Evans, who has been a fixture in the Maroons side since 2013 and served as captain in recent years. In a further bombshell, rising star Tom Dearden has been named at halfback and Cameron Munster will take over the captaincy.

> “It was a tough call, but one made in the best interest of Queensland’s future,” Slater told reporters. “Daly has been outstanding, but it’s time to look forward.”

Career in Question?

At 36, Cherry‑Evans’ omission could spell the end of his Origin career. While Slater praised his leadership and experience, he made it clear the team is transitioning into a new era — with a focus on speed, agility, and youth.

Social media exploded with reactions, many praising the boldness of the call, while others called it a “disrespectful send-off” for one of Queensland’s greats.

> “DCE deserved better than this,” tweeted former Maroons enforcer Gorden Tallis. “You don’t dump your general mid-series.”

Dearden’s Big Test

Tom Dearden, who impressed in Game III of 2022, now gets the biggest opportunity of his career — leading a Queensland team that trails 0–1 in the series and faces must-win pressure in Perth next week.

Munster, now captain, said the team “backs the decision and is ready to go to war.”
