Philadelphia makes a bold midseason move by acquiring one of MLB’s most dynamic outfielders from the Chicago White Sox.
Philadelphia, – June 13, 2025 — In a major swing ahead of the MLB trade deadline, the Philadelphia Phillies have acquired star outfielder Luis Robert Jr. from the Chicago White Sox and signed him to a 3-year, $50 million contract extension. The move signals the Phillies’ intent to go all-in for a deep postseason run.
Robert, 27, brings elite power and speed to the Phillies’ outfield, which has been an area of concern throughout the season. Despite recent injuries, he has remained one of the most feared hitters in the American League when healthy, posting a .276 average with 14 home runs and 10 stolen bases so far this year.
The deal was finalized late Thursday night following days of speculation and trade talks between the two clubs. In return, the Phillies are sending a package of prospects to Chicago, including outfielder Justin Crawford, the club’s top-ranked minor leaguer, and left-handed pitching prospect Jordan Fowler.
“This is the type of move that transforms a roster,” said Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. “Luis Robert Jr. is a game-changer both offensively and defensively. We believe he’ll make an immediate impact as we pursue a championship.”
Robert’s contract includes a $5 million signing bonus and incentives based on postseason performance. He is now under team control through the 2028 season.
Philadelphia’s lineup now boasts a formidable core that includes Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and J.T. Realmuto, with Robert expected to slot into center field and hit near the top of the order.
The Phillies are currently battling for the top spot in the NL East and hope that the addition of Robert can help them overtake the Braves and secure home-field advantage in the postseason.
The White Sox, meanwhile, continue their rebuild, stockpiling young talent with an eye toward long-term competitiveness.
