In a bold move that signals their commitment to bolstering the future of their pitching rotation, the Philadelphia Phillies have officially confirmed the signing of top pitching prospect Gage Wood to a deal worth $6.2 million.
Wood, a standout right-hander from the University of Arkansas, was selected in the first round of the 2025 MLB Draft and quickly became one of the most sought-after arms in this year’s class. The deal surpasses the slot value for his draft position and marks the highest signing bonus ever given by the Phillies to a pitcher, edging out previous top pick Mickey Moniak’s $6.1 million bonus in 2016.
“Gage is a competitor with electric stuff,” said Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski. “We’re thrilled to bring him into the organization and see his development up close.”
The Phillies have been aggressive this draft cycle, finalizing agreements with nearly all their top selections. However, the Gage Wood signing stands out both for its financial weight and its implications: Philadelphia is clearly investing heavily in homegrown pitching as they build for sustained success.
What’s Next?
Wood is expected to report to the Phillies’ minor league complex in Clearwater, Florida, within the week and could make his professional debut shortly thereafter.
