In a momentous ceremony held this morning at the University of Western Sydney, Parramatta Eels head coach Jason Ryles was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy for his outstanding leadership, transformative influence in rugby league, and dedication to advancing sports culture in Australia.
The event, attended by university faculty, students, Eels players, NRL officials, and fans, was a celebration of Ryles’ impact both on and off the field. The university recognized his strategic vision, mentorship, and cultural leadership, which have helped reshape the Eels’ identity and inspired a new generation of athletes.
“Jason Ryles exemplifies the values we aim to instill in our students — integrity, resilience, and innovation,” said University Chancellor Dr. Elise Murphy. “This honorary degree is a reflection of his profound influence on the sporting landscape and his commitment to community development.”
Ryles, who took over the coaching role in 2024, has already made waves in the NRL with his modern coaching style and player-first approach. In his acceptance speech, he credited his team and the Parramatta community: “This recognition is bigger than me — it’s a tribute to every player, coach, and supporter who believes in what we’re building at the Eels.”
Social media has been flooded with praise, with fans hailing the honor as “well deserved” and calling Ryles a “true leader of the game.”
The Eels continue their 2025 campaign under Ryles’ stewardship with renewed momentum and now, a new academic accolade to add to their legacy.
