In a stunning twist that has taken the NRL world by surprise, Brisbane Broncos legend Darren Lockyer has been officially confirmed as the club’s head coach for the 2025 season.
Lockyer, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in rugby league history, announced the news himself early Tuesday morning, saying the time felt right to return to the field — this time, from the coach’s box.
> “I’ve spent years supporting the team from the boardroom and commentary box,” Lockyer said in a club statement. “Now, I’m ready to lead this group from the front. The Broncos mean everything to me, and I believe we’re on the cusp of something great.”
Lockyer takes over from outgoing coach Kevin Walters, who stepped aside after five seasons in charge. Club officials praised Walters for helping rebuild the side into a top-four contender and said Lockyer’s appointment signals a bold new direction.
