In a bold move to reinforce their interior defense and rebounding presence, the Boston Celtics have officially signed center Deandre Ayton to a 3-year, $78 million contract, sources confirmed early Sunday morning.
The 26-year-old former No. 1 overall pick is expected to immediately step into a starting role alongside Jayson Tatum and Derrick White, providing much-needed size and low-post scoring after the departure of Kristaps Porziņģis.
“Deandre brings a physical presence and rebounding edge we’ve needed,” Celtics president Brad Stevens said in a statement. “He’s just entering his prime, and we believe he fits our timeline and culture.”
Ayton averaged 15.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks last season with the Portland Trail Blazers.
The deal includes a player option in Year 3 and partial guarantees tied to postseason appearances.
With this signing, the Celtics signal they are still in championship contention—reloading, not rebuilding.
