In a move that has shocked the NRL world, Brisbane Broncos captain Adam Reynolds has reportedly signed a two-year deal worth $1.2 million with the St George Illawarra Dragons, effective from the 2026 season.
Sources close to the negotiation say the Broncos made the difficult decision to part ways with the veteran playmaker to clear salary cap space as they intensify efforts to bring Ben Hunt back to Red Hill. Reynolds, 34, had been expected to finish his career in Brisbane, but cap pressures and a strategic shift in roster planning appear to have accelerated his departure.
The Dragons, who have struggled for consistency in the halves in recent seasons, see Reynolds as the experienced general they’ve been missing. It’s believed the two-year contract includes leadership incentives and a possible transition role in coaching post-retirement.
Broncos coach Michael Maguire has yet to comment on the move, but insiders suggest the club is planning to restructure its spine around rising stars Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh, while actively pursuing Hunt’s early release from the Dragons.
Fans have reacted with a mix of disbelief and gratitude for Reynolds, who has been instrumental in the Broncos’ resurgence since joining in 2022 from South Sydney. The veteran halfback led the team to a Grand Final appearance in 2023 and remained a pivotal figure in their attack.
Formal announcements from both clubs are expected in the coming days.
