Former NSW forward says Slater’s emotional press conference comments were “completely unnecessary”
The fallout from State of Origin continues, with Aaron Woods hitting back at Billy Slater following the Queensland coach’s passionate post-match press conference.
Slater, clearly emotional after Queensland’s recent defeat, defended his players and questioned the criticism directed their way. But not everyone was impressed by the outburst.
“But one comment that he did make… I just thought Billy went a little bit over the boundary,” Woods said in an interview earlier today. “I just think it was completely unnecessary for the situation.”
Woods, a veteran of the Origin arena, didn’t specify which of Slater’s remarks he took issue with, but made it clear he believed Slater’s reaction was out of step with the reality of the game.
“He’s passionate, no doubt about that,” Woods added. “But when you’re in that role, especially at that level, you’ve got to show a bit more composure. That sort of response doesn’t help anyone—least of all the players he’s trying to protect.”
The war of words adds a new layer of tension ahead of the decider, with both camps under increasing scrutiny as the Origin series reaches its climax.
