In a massive setback for the Parramatta Eels’ finals hopes, fullback Isaiah Iongi has been ruled out for up to six weeks after fracturing his hand during last week’s clash against the Canberra Raiders.
The 21-year-old speedster, who signed with the Eels earlier this year on a reported $300,000 deal, had quickly become a vital part of the club’s backline. His sharp attacking instincts and positional awareness filled a much-needed gap at fullback amid a turbulent season for the Blue and Gold.
Iongi underwent surgery over the weekend and is now in recovery, with the club confirming he is expected to return just in time for a potential finals appearance — should the Eels hold their spot on the ladder.
“He’s been a bright spark for us this year. It’s a tough break, literally and figuratively,” said a team official close to the squad.
With Iongi sidelined, the door opens for a potential reshuffle in the backline or even a surprise return for Dylan Brown in a hybrid role, depending on the coaching staff’s strategy moving forward.
Parramatta faces a critical stretch of games in the coming weeks, and Iongi’s absence will be deeply felt in both attack and defense.
