Willie Peters’ final message to Hull KR players sums up East Hull mood

With the Challenge Cup and League Leaders’ Shield already on display at Sewell Group Craven Park, head coach Willie Peters has told his Hull KR team to “finish the job” and complete a historic treble at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Robins ended 40 years of hurt at Wembley back in June with a dramatic 8-6 win over Warrington Wolves. They then secured the status as the most consistent team in the competition with the League Leaders’ Shield, before clinching back-to-back Grand Final appearance

Head coach Willie Peters will lead out Hull KR at Old Trafford on Saturday.

Hull KR are aiming to become just the fifth Super League club to win the big dance and avenge last year’s 9-2 defeat to Wigan – a result that completed the Warriors’ own Grand Slam of trophies.

“We’re proud of what we’ve achieved, but only so far – we want to finish the job this weekend,” Peters said.

“We’re in a position that not many teams get, and who knows when it will happen again. We need to make the most of it.

“We’re really excited about the opportunity. I think we’re better equipped in terms of that we’ve been here before. I think you have to have setbacks and have those experiences in order to learn, and we’ll see how we go this weekend and how much learnings we’ve got from last year.”

Three of the last five Grand Finals have seen 12 points or fewer scored, including last year’s low-scoring showdown, where Bevan French produced the decisive moment and was fittingly named the inaugural Rob Burrow Player of the Match.

But Peters insists his team will express themselves as they have done all season, having averaged 29 points per game during the regular campaign.

“We want to play, and I’m sure Wigan want to play as well,” said the Australian head coach.

“You play a style all season and you want that to come out at the Grand Final.

“We’ll certainly be promoting playing and doing what we do well, and that’s asking questions. We certainly won’t be going into our shell.

“Last year, we had a tap set and we went into our shell. That’s something that we looked at our first day back. So, if we’re in that position again, we’ll be going after it.”
