Sydney Roosters confirms he’s quitting NRL

Angus Crichton’s move to rugby union has reportedly ended any chance that Zac Lomax will sign with the 15-man code as well. And the Parramatta Eels have announced they are set to take legal action against their former State of Origin and Kangaroos winger.

Crichton confirmed on Wednesday night that he’s quitting the Sydney Roosters at the end of 2026 to join the NSW Waratahs in the hope of representing the Wallabies at the 2027 World Cup. It came just 24 hours after news emerged that Roosters teammate Mark Nawaqanitawase has signed with a Japanese rugby club for 2027 as well.

According to The Daily Telegraph, Crichton’s deal with Rugby Australia has put to bed any thought that Lomax will join him in union. Lomax recently met with Western Force officials after being granted a release by the Parramatta Eels, after the breakaway R360 comp was postponed.

But according to The Telegraph, Rugby Australia could only offer Lomax about $400,000 per season. Leading rugby writer Jamie Pandaram reported on Wednesday that a potential move to union is now no longer viable for both Lomax and Rugby Australia.

Crichton will reportedly get $600,000 per season over a two-year deal, but the second year is a player option. It leaves him the option of heading back to the NRL in 2028 after the World Cup.

The NSW and Kangaroos star played rugby as a schoolboy and is eyeing a switch to inside centre in the 15-man code. “Growing up in Young, I have great memories driving up on buses to Canberra with the other farmers and their families for the Tahs-Brumbies game every year,” Crichton said in a statement confirming his move on Wednesday night.

“To have a chance to play in the same Waratahs jersey as Lote Tuqiri, my favourite rugby player as a kid, is something special. I grew up with a Wallabies jersey and poster on the wall and my dream was to one day represent them. I’m in a position in 2027 to pursue that dream.”
