Spencer Leniu Set to Leave Sydney Roosters as Club Denies New Contract

The Sydney Roosters have informed prop Spencer Leniu that he will not be offered a new contract once his current agreement expires.

This development comes in the wake of Leniu’s struggles to find his footing within the team, despite having participated in the State of Origin last year. As it stands, he is under contract until the conclusion of the 2027 season, and he will be eligible to negotiate with other clubs starting November 1. However, there is a possibility that the Roosters might allow early discussions regarding his future.

Speculation regarding Leniu’s next move has been growing, with the Footy In Focus Podcast featuring insights from former Zero Tackle writer Isaac Issa and Kat Haddad. They indicated that the PNG Chiefs are emerging as a likely destination for him. “There has been a little chatter around it,” Issa noted, echoing sentiments that it would be a logical step for Leniu given his current standing within the Roosters.

If Leniu secures a place with the Chiefs, it would further strengthen the roster of the NRL’s 19th club, which is set to join the competition in 2028. The Chiefs are already looking to build a competitive team, having signed Jarome Luai, who shares a close friendship with Leniu. Additionally, although not yet officially confirmed, reports suggest that Alex Johnston may also be joining the franchise soon, having received clearance from his current team, the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Meanwhile, the Roosters have several established props, including Lindsay Collins and Naufahu Whyte, both of whom are vying for significant roles in the first grade. Despite Leniu’s potential as a State of Origin candidate, his selection for this year’s team appears unlikely due to his form and the depth of the Blues’ prop lineup. Nevertheless, he is expected to play a crucial part for the Roosters as they aim for a premiership run. To date, Leniu has participated in 124 NRL games, along with six State of Origin matches and seven Tests for Samoa.
