Shock Move: Panthers Set to Offer Lindsay Smith $1.2 Million in Long-Term Deal

In a bold and somewhat unexpected move, the Penrith Panthers are reportedly preparing to table a long-term deal worth up to $1.2 million to rising prop Lindsay Smith, signaling their intent to lock in their forward pack amid growing roster uncertainty.

The 24-year-old, who has quietly become a crucial part of Penrith’s middle rotation, is currently signed through 2026. However, sources suggest the club is eager to add at least three more years to his deal — a move that would keep him at the club through the end of 2029.

Smith, who made his debut in 2021, has steadily grown into one of the most reliable forwards in Ivan Cleary’s squad. While not always in the spotlight, his work rate, defensive grit, and discipline have made him a coach’s favourite and a fan-underappreciated cornerstone of the Panthers’ defensive line.

A Retention Strategy Taking Shape

The Panthers have already lost key names like Jarome Luai (Wests Tigers, 2025) and Stephen Crichton (Canterbury), forcing the reigning premiers to double down on player retention. Securing Smith for the long haul could help provide stability as the team navigates through the next phase of its dynasty.

> “Lindsay is one of those players who doesn’t always grab the headlines but does all the dirty work. You can build a pack around guys like that,” said a source close to the club.

The Deal

While the exact terms are still being finalized, insiders suggest the contract will be worth around $400,000 per year, totaling roughly $1.2 million across three seasons. It’s a major vote of confidence in Smith’s development and signals that the Panthers view him as a long-term starter — not just a role player.

What’s Next?

If the deal is completed, expect the Panthers to shift their attention toward other retention targets — and potentially ramp up their pursuit of marquee forward David Fifita, who remains on the open market.
