Roosters Star Signs with Rival Club After Contract Cut Short

In a surprise roster shake-up, the Sydney Roosters have confirmed that one of their star players has departed the club effective immediately, signing with a rival NRL team after his contract was mutually terminated.

The unexpected move comes just months before pre-season training, and while the Roosters have not publicly disclosed the player’s destination, league sources indicate he has inked a multi-year deal with a top-eight rival.

In a brief statement, the Roosters thanked the player for his contribution and professionalism throughout his tenure.

“We’ve agreed to release him early from his contract so he can pursue another opportunity,” a club spokesperson said. “He’s been a valued member of our squad, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter.”

The player’s early exit is believed to have been triggered by salary cap pressures and roster reshuffling ahead of the 2026 NRL season. The Roosters are expected to use the freed-up cap space to target a marquee forward or outside back before the November 1 free agency window.

NRL insiders report that the rival club wasted no time in snapping up the experienced star, who will add significant depth and leadership to their squad.

“He wanted more consistent first-grade minutes and a defined role, which his new club could guarantee,” an NRL source told League HQ.

While the Roosters are disappointed to lose a key contributor, head coach Trent Robinson remains confident the team’s depth and emerging talent can fill the void.

“Change is part of the modern game,” Robinson said. “We’ve got some great young players ready to step up, and we’re excited about what’s ahead.”

Further details on the player’s new club and contract terms are expected to be announced in the coming days.
