Penrith Panthers hooker Secures $1.25m Panthers Deal After Knocking Back First Offer

Penrith Panthers hooker has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth around $1.25 million, locking in one of the club’s most reliable performers until the end of 2027.

The deal comes after Kenny initially turned down Penrith’s first offer earlier this year, holding firm in negotiations as he sought a contract that better reflected his value to the reigning premiers. His patience has now paid off, with the Panthers rewarding the 26-year-old with a significant upgrade that cements his place in the club’s spine for the foreseeable future.

Kenny, who replaced Api Koroisau as the Panthers’ starting No.9 in 2023, has become a cornerstone of Ivan Cleary’s side. While not as flashy as some of the game’s attacking hookers, his toughness, defensive work rate and leadership have made him indispensable in the Panthers’ quest for continued dominance.

The new deal is understood to be worth approximately $7500,000 per season, a substantial lift from his previous terms and recognition of the role he plays in keeping Penrith’s dynasty rolling.

Panthers coach Ivan Cleary praised Kenny’s growth in recent years.

“Mitch is the kind of player every coach wants — reliable, selfless, and committed to the team,” Cleary said. “He’s worked incredibly hard to establish himself and we’re thrilled to have him here long-term.”

With the club juggling the salary cap while trying to retain its premiership-winning core, securing Kenny’s signature is seen as a major win. The deal also sends a strong message of loyalty, with the Bathurst product opting to remain in Penrith despite rival clubs circling.

For Kenny, the contract is a reward for resilience, having worked his way up from the NSW Cup ranks to grand final starter.

“Penrith is home. I love this club and I love this group of players. It means a lot to stay here and I’m excited for what’s ahead,” Kenny said.

The Panthers’ attention now shifts to locking in other key members of their roster as they aim to extend one of the most dominant eras in modern NRL history.
