Parramatta Eels five-eighth Dylan Brown is facing a potential one-match suspension following a collision with referee Gerard Sutton during the Eels’ recent clash with the Canterbury Bulldogs.
The incident occurred during a tense moment in the match as Brown chased down a loose ball and inadvertently made contact with the official. The NRL Match Review Committee reviewed the play and subsequently charged Brown with a Grade 2 Contrary Conduct offence.
While there is no suggestion of intent, the nature of the contact has prompted disciplinary action. Under the NRL’s judiciary guidelines, a Grade 2 charge carries a one-match ban with an early guilty plea. Should Brown choose to contest the charge at a hearing and be found guilty, the suspension would increase to two matches.
The potential absence of Brown is a significant blow to the struggling Eels, who are already battling to find form in the latter half of the season. Brown has been one of Parramatta’s key playmakers, and his suspension would further test the club’s depth in the halves.
Neither Brown nor the Eels have made a public comment at this stage, but a decision on whether to accept the early plea is expected within the next 24 hours.
The NRL has emphasized in recent seasons the importance of player responsibility around match officials, with increased scrutiny on any physical contact with referees.
Parramatta is scheduled to face the Cronulla Sharks next week.
