In a thrilling contest at Progressive Field on Sunday, Shohei Ohtani made history by becoming the first player in Major League Baseball to reach 20 home runs this season. However, the spotlight wasn’t just on Ohtani’s milestone. The Los Angeles Dodgers relied on clutch performances from Michael Conforto and Max Muncy, both of whom launched crucial home runs to power the team to a 7-5 victory over the Cleveland Guardians.
Ohtani’s towering shot, which came in the top of the 4th inning, extended his remarkable season, putting him at the forefront of the league’s power hitters. The two-way sensation’s home run came off a fastball from Cleveland starter Cal Quantrill, giving the Dodgers a 3-2 lead at the time.
“Every home run is special, but hitting No. 20 feels good,” Ohtani said after the game. “I’m just focused on helping the team win, but it’s nice to reach this milestone.”
However, the Guardians weren’t going to make it easy for the Dodgers. Despite Ohtani’s heroics, Cleveland fought back, tying the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the 5th inning. That’s when Conforto and Muncy delivered the decisive blows.
Conforto’s go-ahead home run in the top of the 7th inning off reliever James Karinchak gave the Dodgers a one-run advantage. Not to be outdone, Muncy followed suit in the 8th, crushing a two-run shot deep into the right-center field seats, extending the Dodgers’ lead to 7-4.
Dodgers’ manager Dave Roberts praised his team’s resilience. “Shohei’s home run was huge, but the timely hitting from Conforto and Muncy really separated the game for us. These guys continue to come through when we need them most.”
Cleveland threatened in the 9th, loading the bases with two outs, but Dodgers closer Evan Phillips was able to seal the win with a strikeout, securing the victory for Los Angeles.
Ohtani’s 20th home run continues his dominant season and solidifies his spot as one of the game’s premier stars. Meanwhile, Conforto and Muncy showed just how dangerous the Dodgers’ lineup is, offering more than enough firepower to back up a strong pitching performance.
With the win, the Dodgers improve to 36-23 on the season, while the Guardians fall to 26-33.
