NRL world rallies around Brisbane Broncos and Queensland champion after heartbreaking reveal

The NRL community is showering Corey Oates with love after the former Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Maroons star broke down on live radio this week while making a confronting revelation about his health. Speaking in the wake of Ryan Papenhuyzen’s decision to effectively retire from the NRL to prioritise his health long-term, Oates got emotional while discussing his own experiences.

Oates played 216 games for the Broncos, and is one of the NRL club’s favourite sons. The winger also played nine State of Origin games for Queensland and helped the Maroons win multiple series, playing instrumental roles in 2016 and 2022.

The 31-year-old retired from NRL at the end of the 2024 season, moving into the media and landing a radio role on KIIS FM in Brisbane. On Thursday morning’s show, Oates was discussing Papenhuyzen’s revelation that he doesn’t see himself ever returning to the NRL when he broke down in tears.

Papenhuyzen revealed this week that a head knock against the Broncos late in the 2025 season made him re-evaluate whether he wanted to keep playing or put his health first. Oates went into depth about his own experiences and teared up when he admitted he worries for his long-term health.

Oates said he had three “really bad” head knocks throughout his career – including two in one season – and now suffers from constant headaches. The father of two admitted it “scares” him thinking about the possible long-term repercussions.

Co-host Robin Bailey wrapped her arms around Oates as he broke down, while Kip Wightman said: “I get it because it is scary when you see what’s happened to some older players that have had too many head knocks.” Bailey added: “Well done and thank you for talking about it. This is the game we all love and there are massive consequences. We love you Corey Oates.”

Fans were stunned by Oates’ emotional reveal, with many sending messages of support on social media. Former NRL player Jayden Nikorima wrote: “Love ya brother”. Another person commented: “Corey is such a lovely person, thanks for telling your story.” While a third added: “So hard to hear – but also sadly common.”
