Longi Opens Up on His Move: Leaving the Eels for Penrith

In a revealing interview, Parramatta Eels fullback Isaiah Iongi discusses his dramatic switch to the Penrith Panthers, explaining how his ambition and the coach’s support reshaped his NRL journey.

Early Days & Rising Through the Panthers Pathway

Isaiah Iongi, a promising 21-year-old Queenslander from Redcliffe, first caught Penrith’s eye while playing for the Norths Devils. In 2022, he joined the Panthers’ SG Ball setup, overcoming the challenge of being blocked by NSW and Australia fullback Dylan Edwards. Despite limited first-grade opportunities, he learned under elite guidance, honing his craft through nearly 60 NSW Cup appearances.

A Courageous Career Move

Eager for a clearer path to the No. 1 jersey, Iongi approached Panthers coach Ivan Cleary to discuss his future. Cleary showed understanding and released him from the final year of his contract, facilitating a move to the Parramatta Eels. Iongi described the conversation as supportive, saying, “He was so good about it and wanted what was best for me.”

Joining the Eels and Embracing Opportunity

Head coach Jason Ryles personally reached out with a compelling vision. Iongi recalled being “shocked” but excited when Ryles said he wanted to “build something here” with him. The support and coaching style resonated deeply. “He allows us to play to our strengths… I’m loving all of it.”

The Bigger Picture

This move reflects a broader talent shuffle between Parramatta and Penrith. Notably, Blaize Talagi—another young Eels fullback—made the opposite switch, moving to the Panthers mid-2024 after rejecting a Parramatta contract and citing the chance to play alongside Nathan Cleary as a major draw

Why the Switch Actually Matters

Iongi’s decision underscores a practical truth: talent development paths can be as influential as dollars. Even in development systems stacked with stars, players need clarity and opportunity. Iongi’s move wasn’t about leaving Penrith—it was about making his opportunity. And it was Ryles’s belief in him at Parramatta that sealed the deal.

Summary Table

Factor Insight
Blocked Position Stuck behind Dylan Edwards at Penrith
Coach Communication Ivan Cleary supported a release so Iongi could seek better opportunities
Eels Attraction Jason Ryles offered a clear path, strong mentorship, and a No. 1 role
Talagi Connection Talagi’s move to Penrith shows a similar talent swap between clubs
