Kawasaki has officially pulled the covers off its highly anticipated 2026 KX550, and it’s making waves in the motocross world.
Slated to retail for $12,750 in the U.S., the KX550 is more than just a bigger sibling to the KX450—it’s a new standard in the upper mid-displacement motocross segment.
With initial availability in select European dealerships starting June 2025 and a North American rollout in July, global markets can expect it soon after.
The KX550 builds on Kawasaki’s race-proven DNA, designed to deliver unmatched performance, agility, and durability. At the heart of the KX550 is a newly engineered 549cc liquid-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine. Developed in tandem with Kawasaki’s factory racing team, the engine features a revised bore and stroke ratio optimized for torque and high-revving power. The result is a broader powerband, making it equally lethal on tight corners and high-speed straights.
Mated to the engine is a slick-shifting five-speed transmission with revised gear ratios, paired with Kawasaki’s Launch Control Mode (LCM) and selectable engine maps, accessible via a new handlebar-mounted switch system. The addition of smartphone connectivity through Kawasaki’s Rideology app also allows riders to fine-tune fuel injection settings and engine mapping with ease.
In terms of chassis, the KX550 boasts a lightweight aluminum perimeter frame, redesigned for better rigidity and reduced weight. Showa A-Kit-style suspension—49mm coil-spring forks and a Uni-Trak rear shock—provide race-level damping and adjustability for a wide range of rider preferences and terrain types. The result is precision handling, improved cornering stability, and superior traction under accelerations.
Stylistically, the 2026 KX550 maintains the aggressive, race-ready aesthetics Kawasaki fans expect, with new bodywork for improved ergonomics and rider movement. A flatter seat profile, slimmer shrouds, and updated footpeg positioning enhance control and rider confidence.
The KX550 also comes equipped with premium components: oversized petal disc brakes for improved stopping power, a Renthal Fatbar handlebar, and Dunlop MX33 tires as standard. Combined with its advanced tech suite and competitive pricing, the KX550 is poised to be a favorite among both serious racers and dedicated enthusiasts
With the motocross world evolving rapidly, Kawasaki’s 2026 KX550 makes a bold statement: power, precision, and purpose-built performance in a package that’s ready to dominate the track. Keep an eye on dealerships this summer—the KX550 is coming in hot.
