Ivan Cleary Blasts NRL Judiciary: Panthers Coach Labels Suspension Process ‘Disturbing’

Penrith Panthers head coach Ivan Cleary has launched a scathing critique of the NRL’s judiciary system, describing the match review process as “disturbing” following the two-game suspension handed to forward Scott Sorensen.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Cleary expressed frustration over what he believes is a growing inconsistency in disciplinary decisions. The coach argued that Sorensen’s charge, stemming from an incident in last weekend’s match, was harsh and lacked context.

> “There’s definitely work to be done,” Cleary said. “We’re seeing decisions made that just don’t make sense to us as a club. The inconsistency is disturbing.”

Sorensen’s suspension comes at a crucial point in the season as the Panthers look to regain momentum in a tightly contested ladder race. The club has battled through injuries and Origin disruptions, with Cleary already managing the limited availability of star halfback Nathan Cleary, who is still recovering from a minor groin issue.

Cleary emphasized the need for greater transparency and consistency in the judiciary’s decision-making process, echoing frustrations shared by other clubs in recent weeks.

The Panthers are preparing to face the Canterbury Bulldogs this Friday in a pivotal Round 17 clash, with Cleary confirming that Sorensen’s ban will not be contested.
