‘Genuine interest’: Inside hulking Broncos prop’s secret talks with two NFL teams

Ben Te Kura could be out to follow in the footsteps of Aussie NFL superstar Jordan Mailata after a bombshell report emerged that the hulking Broncos prop has met with two NFL teams.

It has been revealed that both the New York Jets and Detroit Lions are “absolutely” interested in signing the hulking Broncos prop right away.

According to Code Sports, the Lions and Jets both approached the 205cm, 122kg Te Kura back in February and were taken by the 21-year-old, with both teams impressed with Te Kura’s mobility given his enormous frame.

Australian-based NFL agent Dwane Bugden said Te Kura could essentially start his NFL journey as soon as today if he wanted to.

“The interest is absolutely genuine,” Bugden told Code Sports.

Both New York and Detroit are super keen on Ben.

Te Kura is contracted with the Broncos until the end of 2027 but the club reportedly won’t play hard ball if Te Kura wants to leave early.

“He would have gone right away this season, but he had his contract with the Bronco, so he had to weigh it up and take it into consideration,” Bugden said.

“They are keen as mustard. They would sign him tomorrow, so Ben will make a decision at the end of this season and see what he wants to do.”

Lions and Jets officials are hoping Te Kura could turn into the next Mailata.

Hailing from western Sydney, Mailata played junior grade football for Souths before linking up with the NFL in 2017 via the International Player Pathway Program.

In just a few years, he has had a meteoric rise to become one of the best and highest paid offensive linemen in the league.

In February, Mailata’s Philadelphia Eagles hoisted the Lombardi Trophy after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59.

Te Kura hasn’t been able to break into the Broncos’ first grade side with regularity this season, only featuring in two games.

In an interview with Code Sports, Te Kura admitted he there was an interest in one day joining the NFL but isn’t looking too far ahead.

“Obviously I am worried about this sport (rugby league) at the moment. Right now my priority is getting a Broncos jersey, but it (NFL) could be something I am interested in down the track,” Te Kura said.

“I’m happy at the Broncos and I want to prove myself in the NRL. But you have to do what’s best for yourself and your family.

“Down the road, it is an option for me … Some opportunities only come once in your life.”
