From spoon battle to finals race: Inside Panthers’ rollercoaster year

It has been a season like no other for the Penrith Panthers. Sitting last after 12 rounds, their campaign looked doomed before it had even begun.

Yet under the steady hand of coach Ivan Cleary and a playing group unwilling to surrender, the Panthers have turned despair into belief—storming back into finals contention and now standing just one win away from another grand final.

The darkest point

By midseason, the reigning powerhouse of the NRL found themselves staring at the wooden spoon battle. Injuries, inconsistency, and a lack of rhythm plagued the early months, with fans and critics alike writing off their hopes of adding to their recent era of dominance.

“It honestly felt surreal,” admitted one senior player. “We’d never been in that position before, and it hit hard. People were questioning whether we’d lost our edge.”

Cleary’s calm approach

Rather than panic, Cleary doubled down on discipline and belief. Training sessions were stripped back to basics, focusing on effort areas and defensive resilience—the hallmarks of Penrith’s dynasty years. He also rotated younger players through key roles, a move that brought fresh energy and reminded the squad of its depth.

“The message was simple,” Cleary explained. “Stick together, trust the process, and play our way back into form. There were no shortcuts.”

Turning point

A gritty win in Round 14 sparked momentum. From there, the Panthers rediscovered their defensive steel, gradually clawing their way up the ladder. The return of injured stars further boosted morale, while the rise of new faces ensured the side carried more hunger than ever.

“The belief came back,” said another player. “One win turned into three, then five. Suddenly, we weren’t thinking about the spoon—we were thinking about September again.”

Preparing for another shot

Now, as they prepare for a preliminary final, the Panthers’ season is being described by players as their “strangest yet.” From staring down humiliation to mounting one of the great turnarounds, they have shown resilience befitting a champion team.

Whether or not they complete the fairytale, Cleary insists the journey itself has forged a stronger squad. “This year tested us in ways we’d never been tested before,” he said. “But we’ve come out the other side tougher, closer, and ready for whatever comes next.”

For the Panthers faithful, what once looked like a year to forget has become a season they’ll never stop talking about—proof that even champions can stumble, but it’s how they rise that truly defines them.
