Former Panther Taylan May Signs Shock $900 Million Train-and-Trial Deal with Wests Tigers

SYDNEY, June 12, 2025 — In what is being called the most astonishing contract announcement in rugby league history, former Penrith Panthers winger Taylan May has signed a jaw-dropping $900 million train-and-trial deal with the Wests Tigers.

The deal, confirmed early Thursday morning by club officials, has stunned fans and analysts alike — not just for its staggering figure, but for its structure. A train-and-trial contract, typically reserved for fringe players or those seeking redemption, has never been associated with such an astronomical valuation.

“We believe in Taylan’s potential, and this agreement reflects both our commitment to rebuilding and his unmatched commercial value to the club,” said Tigers CEO Shane Richardson. “He’s not just a player — he’s a movement.”

May, who has been out of the NRL spotlight since departing Penrith in 2024 amid off-field issues and injury setbacks, expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “This is my shot to prove myself again,” he said. “It’s not about the money — it’s about legacy.”

Sources close to the negotiation have confirmed the contract is heavily performance-incentivized, with only a fraction of the $900 million guaranteed. Bonuses are tied to on-field performance, ticket sales, social media engagement, and even merchandise revenue — an unconventional approach that hints at a hybrid sports-entertainment model.

The NRL has yet to comment on the legality or cap implications of the contract. League insiders suggest the deal could force a reevaluation of salary cap loopholes and player valuation models.

Fans have taken to social media in disbelief, with hashtags like #Mayday and #TigersTreasure trending nationally. Some see the move as a PR stunt, while others believe it could mark a turning point in how NRL clubs do business.

May is expected to join Tigers training this week and could feature in a reserve-grade match as early as next weekend.

More updates to follow as this story develops.
