Opinion is sharply divided over the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles’ controversial decision to shift star fullback Tom Trbojevic into the centres — a move that insiders suggest has caused significant unrest within the club.
The positional shake-up, announced earlier this week, comes as the embattled Sea Eagles struggle to find consistency amid a turbulent season. Trbojevic, a Dally M Medal winner and long-time cornerstone of Manly’s backline, has predominantly starred at fullback when fit. His switch has raised eyebrows across the NRL landscape and, according to sources close to the club, “hasn’t gone down too well” with everyone in the Sea Eagles’ inner circle.
Club officials have remained tight-lipped about the reasoning behind the tactical adjustment, though head coach Anthony Seibold has hinted at a desire to manage Trbojevic’s workload and prolong his career after several injury-interrupted seasons.
But not everyone is convinced.
“This feels like a desperate move,” said one former Manly player, speaking on the condition of anonymity. “Tom’s one of the best fullbacks in the world when healthy — moving him away from that role sends a confusing message.”
Fans, too, appear split. While some support the decision as a pragmatic step to preserve Trbojevic’s long-term health, others argue it diminishes his impact and could disrupt the team’s structure even further.
With pressure mounting and results failing to meet expectations, the Sea Eagles now face a critical juncture — and the handling of Trbojevic’s role may well define the club’s fortunes for the rest of the season.
