The NRL has issued its “final warning” to Todd Payten following the North Queensland coach’s latest swipe at match officials.
The 46-year-old expressed his frustrations with the handling of two contentious high shot calls by match officials on Sunday after his team’s thrilling draw with Penrith.
Payten was asked if he wanted to see better consistency from officials following his vent about the high shots, to which he replied: “Yes, I do, that’s what they’re paid to do.”
Panthers coach Ivan Cleary also had issues with what he thought was a missed offside call.
“There was a lot of calls throughout the game but obviously it hurts a bit more when you see one you could’ve won the game with,” Cleary said.
In an unusual step, the NRL said it took umbrage of Payten’s criticism dating back to 2020.
“The NRL has issued Cowboys coach Todd Payten with a final warning for repeated and consistent criticism of NRL match officials,” a statement from the league said.
“Mr Payten has been reminded of his obligations under the NRL rules and code of conduct as well as his general responsibility as a sporting leader to set an appropriate example to grassroots and junior participants across the broader rugby league community.
“All rugby league participants are reminded to respect referees and match officials who perform a vital and integral role within the game.”
The Cowboys and Payten have yet to comment on the warning.
